Article in Selecciones Reader's Digest, November 1970

The USA version of Reader's Digest magazine of August 1970 published an article entitled 'Paper Magic of Origami' which was 'condensed' from a similar article in 'Beacon Magazine' of Hawaii. In November 1970 a similar article was published in the Spanish language version of Reader's Digest, Selecciones del Reader's Digest.

My thanks to Juan Gimeno for sharing his copy of this article with me.

In this version the editor has added a footnote explaining the meaning of the word 'origami', which, presumably, would not otherwise have been understood by the readers. It says, roughly: 'In Spanish origami is an art that is also known by the name of "papiroflexia" a word formed from the Latin papyrus (paper) and flexia from the verb flecto (to bend). To date the most important work on origami published in Spain and written by a Spaniard is called "Papiroflexia Zoomórfica" authored by Dr Vicente Solórzano Sagredo. Also in his day the great writer and philosopher Miguel de Unamuno wrote an essay entitled "Apuntes para un tratado de cocotología" a name by which he designated the manufacture of paper pajaritas."
