This
page attempts to record what is known about the origin
and history of the origami design known as the Sailboat,
which is distinguished from the Double Boat with Two
Sails by having an integral stand. Please contact me if
you know any of this information is incorrect or if you
have any other information that should be added. Thank
you. ********** 1910 As far as I know this design first appears in the historical record in 'Studies in Invalid Occupation' by Susan E Tracy was published by Whitcomb and Barrows in Boston in 1910. Note that the text makes clear that 'Turn up inside' means 'Turn up behind' ********** The design also appears: 1951 In a single-sailed version in 'Origami to Kirinuki' by Saburo Ueda, which was published by Kokkado in Tokyo, most probably in 1951. ********** 1963 As 'Sailing Boat' in 'Folding Paper Toys' by Shari Lewis and Lillian Oppenheimer, which was first published by Stein and Day, Inc in the USA in 1963, although in this case one of the bottom points is folded forwards to provide extra stability. ********** |
