Origami to Kirinuki by Saburo Ueda, 1951

'Origami to Kirinuki' (Paperfolding and Cutting Out) by Saburo Ueda was published by Kokkado in Tokyo in 1951.

The details on this page are taken from a copy of the work kindly made available to me by the British Origami Society which is dated Showa 30 (ie 1955). This edition makes no reference to an earlier publication date, however, in her essay 'On the Evolution of the Notation System' (available online here) Laura Rozenberg states that she possesses a copy of the work published in 1951 (and another from 1952).

I have assumed that all three editions (printings?) are identical but will amend this page accordingly if evidence to the contrary emerges.

The cover states that Saburo Ueda is the Principal of City West Kindergarten and the work is fundamentally a kindergarten manual. It concentrates on paperfolding and paper cutting but there are also several pages showing how to make designs from wooden dowels and peas etc.

Many of the paperfolding designs are cut. Many of them are also decorated after the folding has finished. The diagrams are very rudimentary in places.

The author does not give any information about the origin of any of the designs.

Selected pages from the work (ie the full work except those pages dealing with non-paperfolding related material) are given at the foot of this page.
