A design for a folded paper filter appears in 'Pliage et Decoupage du Papier' by C Savineau, which was published by Librairie Hatchette et Cie in Paris in 1897.

An article in El Monitor 314 of 31st May 1899 contains a simple design for a paper filter. The accompanying text says, roughly: 'The folds, alternately inward and outward, allow you to fold a square in the shape of a funnel or filter for syrups and liqueurs.'

'La Ensenanza del Trabajo Manuel' by Pedro de Alcántara García and Teodosio Leal y Quiroga, which was published in Madrid in 1903, contains instructions for folding a paper filter suitable for use in a laboratory.
