Using Folded Paper Moulds to Pleat Fabric

This page is being used to collect information about the history of using Folded Paper Moulds to Pleat Fabric. Please contact me if you know any of this information is incorrect or if you have any other important information that should be added. Thank you.

The technique of pleating paper by folding it inside a folded paper mould or sandwiched in between two such moulds, then setting the creases into the fabric by heating the fabric and the moulds in an oven, is still in use in several specialist studios in Paris. It is difficult, however, to discover definitive information about the history of the technique or how long it has been practised for.

The shoulders of this ladies dress in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum in New York (see here), which is said to be dateable to 1778-80, appear to have been folded using paper moulds into a pattern of tessellating triangles and rectangles, most of which have now lost definition.
