This
page attempts to record what is known about the origin
and history of the origami design known as the Jumping
Frog. There are several designs known by this name. Here
I mean the one that is commonly folded from a business
card. Please contact me if you know any of this
information is incorrect or if you have any other
information that should be added. Thank you. ********** 1963 As far as I know this design first appeared in 'Folding Paper Toys' by Shari lewis and Lillian Oppenheimer which was published by Stein and Day in New York in 1963. ********** 1964 The designs is mentioned in Vol 4: Issue 1 of 'The Origamian' for Spring 1964: (It is not clear what the 'our' in 'our Jumping Frog' refers to, but it suggests that the design may possibly have been originated by Lillian Oppenheimer and Shari Lewis.) ********** 1968 A version of the design made from a dollar bill, and attributed to Robert Neale, in which the extra paper has been used tgo give the frog back legs, appears in 'Folding Money, Volume Two' edited by Samuel Randlett, which was published by Magic Inc of Chicago in 1968. ********** |
