This effect is often associated with Lillian Oppenheimer (1898 - 1992).

As far as I know this effect first appears in the second edition of 'Het Grote Vouwboek' by Aart van Breda, which was published by Uitgeverij van Breda in 1963 under the title 'The Ship is Wrecked'.
