Folded Paper Foxes / Raccoon Dogs | |||||||
This
page is being used to collect information about the
history of folded paper foxes and raccoon dogs. Please
contact me if you know any of this information is
incorrect or if you have any other information that
should be added. Thank you. ********** The Fox Face - 1878 onwards ********** 1885 Two related designs for 'kitsune' (fox spirits) appear in 'Kindergarten Shoho' (Preliminary Kindergarten) by Iijima Hanjuro, which was copyrighted on October 4th Meiji 17 (1884) and published by Fukuda Senzo in August of Meiji 18 (1885).
The same book contains a somewhat similar design for a 'tanuki' (raccoon dog). It is worth noting, however, that this same design is interpreted as a crab in 'Kani Shukogaku' (Simple Handicraft) by Tamotsu Shibue, which was published in Tokyo in 1892. ********** 1892 One of these designs also appears, again as 'kitsune', in 'Kani Shukogaku' (Simple Handicraft) by Tamotsu Shibue, which was published in Tokyo in 1892 ********** 1893 A way of folding a Fox (head) appears in 1893 in volume 5 issue 19 of 'Shokokumin' children's magazine. I cannot reconstruct this design from thre diagrams. ********** The Fox Mask - 1905 onwards ********** 1944 A compound fox made from two bird bases appears in 'Origami Shuko' by Isao Honda, which was published in 1944. ********** 1959 'How to Make Origami' by Isao Honda, which was published by Toto Shuppan Co. Ltd in Japan. by McDowell Obolensky of New York in the USA and by Museum Press Ltd of London in England, in 1959, contains diagrams for a compound fox in two parts, glued together. ********** 1960 A similar compound design for a ' A Fox' appears in 'All About Origami' by Isao Honda, which was published by Toto Bunka Company, Limited in Tokyo in 1960. The ears are created using a cut.
