of Paper Books and Folding Pages (although, at present,

you. ********** Paper Codices Codices made from papyrus, vellum or parchment were assembled from pages folded once (folio). Codices made from paper were assembled from pages folded once (folio), twice (quarto) or three times (octavo).. The earliest known, reliably dateable, paper codex is an incomplete manuscript of the 'Kitab Gharib al-Hadith' by Abu Ubaid al-Qasim bin Salam (770–838) which was copied in 866 CE.
