Another Double Boat

This page is being used to collect information about the history of the paperfolding design I call Another Double Boat. Please contact me if you know any of this information is incorrect or if you have any other information that should be added. Thank you.

**********

In China (and in publications by Chinese authors)

1934

The design appears as 'Double Boat' in 'Zhezhi Xinfa' (New Ways to Fold Paper), which was published by The Commercial Press in China in 1934. The text says, roughly translated, 'This is the same as the double boat made by the old method but the paper has four layers and is more solid so it won't fall over.'

**********

In Japan (and in publications by Japanese authors)

1959

An unusual way of folding 'Another Double Boat' appears in 'Fun-time Paper Folding' by Elinor Tripato Massoglio, which was published by Childrens Press in Chicago in 1959.

**********

In Europe and the Americas

1873

As far as I know this design first appears in 'Die Praxis Des Kindergartens' by August Koehler, which was published by Herman Bohlau in Weimar in 1873.

**********

The design also appears:

1877

As 'Twin Boat', in 'Kindergarten Practice' by Mary Gurney, which is a substantially abridged version, in two parts, of 'Die Praxis Des Kindergartens' by August Koehler. The second part, 'Froebel's Plane Surfaces', contains sections dealing with paper folding, cutting and weaving. The date of the first edition is not known. The second edition was published in 1877 in London by A N Myers and Co. Fig 22 shows Version 2 of the Cigar Case and it is clear from the context that this is Another Double Boat rather than the standard Double Boat design.

**********

1895

As 'A Double Boat' in 'Course of Paperfolding' by Eleonore Heerwart, which was published by Charles and Dible in London and Glasgow in 1895 in a section of designs made from Kohler's Groundform.

**********

1932

In 'Winter Nights Entertainments' by R M Abraham was first published by Constable and Constable in London in 1932.
