Volume IV of 'The Natural History of Animals, Vegetables and Minerals' is an English translation, published in London, probably in 1776, of part of the 36 volume work 'Histoire naturelle, générale et particuliére' by George Louis Leclerc, Count de Buffon. It contains a discussion of:

and incidentally mentions folded paper crowns, which, from the context, are clearly single-sheet paperfolds not cut or multiple-sheet designs. We do not, of course, know which particular design of folded paper crown was being referred to here.
