'Les Paysans' by Honore de Balzac was published posthumously in 1855, having been brought to completion by his wife. It contains the following passage mentioning cocottes and paper boats:

This extract is taken from an edition published in 1858 but I believe the wording is identical to that in the original. The work is part of the series 'Scenes de la vie de camapagne' which is in turn part of 'La vie humane'.
