The Inferno of Taddeo di Bartolo, c1393 | |||||||
The
Inferno of Taddeo di Bartolo is part of a group of
frescoes painted by Taddeo di Bartolo (c1363 - 1422) in
the Collegiata di Santa Maria Assunta in San Gimignano,
Tuscany, Italy in c1393. The design contains two types of written inscriptions to help explain the meaning of the painting. The main inscriptions give broad categories of sins, while subsidiary inscriptions explain the exact sins that individuals are being punished for e.g. sodomy. These subsidiary inscriptions are written on a very basic form of paper hat worn by the offenders, which are now commonly known as mitres of infamy. ********** ********** ********** ********** |
