This effect appears in Volume 2 of 'La Science Amusante' by Tom Tit which was published in Paris by Librairie Larousse in 1892. It was almost certainly published earlier as an article in 'L'Illustration' but I do not have details of when that publication occurred.

In 'Pasatiempos: Fisica Recreativa', which was published by Editorial Muntanola in Barcelona, probably c1918.
