An article entitled 'The Kindergarten: XVIII' and subtitled 'The Sixth Occupation: The Surface: Paper Folding' by Anna W Barnard was published in the issue of 'The Ladies Home Journal' for January 1889. ********** Analysis The article begins with a clear explanation of the difference between 'coated' and 'engine-colored' papers: The way in which paperfolding is taught in an American kindergarten at this time is clearly described. Forms of beauty are also referred to as 'forms of symmetry'. Forms of life are also referred to as 'forms of use'. Two list of forms of life are given, one from 'the first fundamental form' (which seems to be a doubly blintzed square ie Froebel's second groundform). And one from the second fundamental form (which seems to be a triply blintzed square ie Froebel's third groundform). Only two of these are illustrated: The Boat with Fishbox *** This design appears to be a variant of The Bed And not all can be identified with any certainty. ********** The Article ********** |
