The Dove

This page is being used to collect information about the history of the paper plane design known as the Dove, which is a single-sheet version of the Swallow folded from an oblong. Early versions of the design (and some later ones) are heavily cut in a way reminiscent of the Fold and Cut Paper Aeroplane. A fully uncut version does not appear until 1961.

Please contact me if you know any of this information is incorrect or if you have any other information that should be added. Thank you.

As far as I know a heavily cut version of this design first appears as 'El Aeroplano' in Booklet 5 of 'Trabajos Manuales Salvatella - Plegado de figuras de papel', which was published by Editorial Miguel A Salvatera in Barcelona in or around 1929.

1939

A similar design appears in 'El Mundo de Papel' by Dr Nemesio Montero, which was published by G Miranda in Edicions Infancia in Valladolid in 1939 contains 'El aeroplano', a hybrid design putting together the nose and wings of the Swallow and the fuselage and tail of the Cut and Fold Model Aeroplane.

A similar design, but without the propellor, appears as 'El Avion' in 'Papiroflexia' by Elias Gutierrez Gil, which was self-published in 1951.

1952

The design also appears as 'Aeroplano' in 'Una Hoja de Papel' by Lorenzo Herrero, which was published by Miguel A Salvatella in Barcelona in 1952.

As far as I know diagrams for this design first appear as 'Rupert's Paper Glider' in the 1957 Rupert Annual.

1961

A one-piece version of the Swallow appears as 'Taube' (dove) in 'Wir Falten' by Joachim Schönherr and Gerta Schumann, which was published by Rudolf Arnold Verlag in Leipzig in 1961.

1962

The 1962 Rupert Annual contained instructions for folding 'A Paper Glider', which is a heavily cut version of the Dove design.
