This page attempts to record what is known about the history of the paperfolding design I call the Decorative Frame. Thank you. ********** In Japan (and in books by Japanese authors) 1905 This design appears in 'Shukoka Kyoju Saian' by Gentaro Tanahashi and Hideyoshi Okayama, which was published by Hobunkan in Tokyo in 1905.
********** In Western Europe and the Americas 1894 As far as I know this design first appears as 'Cadre' in an article by J Marteau in 'Manuel General de L'Instruction Primaire' of 17th February 1894.
********** The same design appears: 1897 As 'Cadre rectangulaire' in 'Pliage et Decoupage du Papier' by C Savineau, which was published by Librairie Hatchette et Cie in Paris in 1897.
********** 1899 As 'Marco para cuadro rectangular' in an article in El Monitor 318 of 30th September 1899.
********** 1951 A square version of the same frame appears as 'Marco' (Frame) in Plegado laminas published by Della Penna, April 1951.
