In Japan (and in books by Japanese authors)

1905

This design appears in 'Shukoka Kyoju Saian' by Gentaro Tanahashi and Hideyoshi Okayama, which was published by Hobunkan in Tokyo in 1905.

In Western Europe and the Americas

1894

As far as I know this design first appears as 'Cadre' in an article by J Marteau in 'Manuel General de L'Instruction Primaire' of 17th February 1894.

1897

As 'Cadre rectangulaire' in 'Pliage et Decoupage du Papier' by C Savineau, which was published by Librairie Hatchette et Cie in Paris in 1897.

As 'Marco para cuadro rectangular' in an article in El Monitor 318 of 30th September 1899.

1951

A square version of the same frame appears as 'Marco' (Frame) in Plegado laminas published by Della Penna, April 1951.
