Handbüchlein der Papierfaltekunst by J Sperl, 1904 | |||||||
'Handbüchlein
der Papierfaltekunst' (Handbook of Paperfolding Art) by J
Sperl was first published by by H Hartleben's Verlag in
Wien and Leipzig in 1904. Paperfolding designs are scattered throughout the book, sometimes as complete designs and sometimes as elements in designs largely made using cardboard modelling or paper sloyd techniques. None of the designs require glue but some of them are designed to hold together by means of interlocking tabs and pockets. There is also an appendix about 'Das Bilderausschneiden' (Cutting Out Pictures). I have not included details of this appendix on this page, since it only includes minimal reference to paperfolding. This page is based on the 1922 second edition, a copy of which was kindly made available to me by Birgit Ebbert. As far as I know the content of the first and second editions is identical. A low-res copy of the whole work, apart from the appendix, appears at the foot of this page. The Foreword (see below) states that the book is primarily intended 'to bring much joy to young people' but that it will also serve as 'a welcome aid for parents and educators'. The author also states that the 'paper models are not held together with any adhesive' and stresses that practices paperfolding helps to develop manual dexterity. ********** This work is mentioned in Gershon Legman's 'Bibliography of Paperfolding' which was published in 1952. I do not know where Legman obtained the information that the author's first name was Josef, or whether this is correct. The books only give the author's name as J Sperl. ********** ********** Analysis Only those designs which are completely, or mainly, produced by paperfolding have been included in this analysis.
