Advert for The 1st International Paper Airplane Competition in The New York Times, 12th December 1966

This is the advert that launched The 1st International Paper Airplane Competition. It features three paper planes:

The Paper Dart (here called 'the classic paper plane)

A version of the Paper Dart with the keel inverted to form a tail, which is said to have been 'First developed among paper airplane designers in the 1930's' (sic). The text says 'Note hooked nose' but the design does not possess this feature.

A third plane with a blunt nose and upturned side stabilisers.

The advert refers to Leonardo da Vinci as 'the Patron Saint of paper airplanes'.

The winners of each of four categories: duration aloft: distance flown: acrobatics: Origami will receive a 'Leonardo' trophy, silver for amateurs and titanium for air travel professionals.
